Until March 2018 Professor Anthony Costello was Director of the Department of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, WHO Geneva. Previously he was Director of the Institute for Global Health at University College London (UCL) and founder of an international charity, Women and Children First. He has published 295 papers on various aspects of global maternal and child health, including ten population cluster randomised trials in India, Malawi, Bangladesh and Nepal, which showed large reductions in maternal and newborn death rates in marginalised communities. He chaired two Lancet Commissions on the Health Effects of Climate Change, and is Acting Director of the Lancet Countdown for Climate Action and Health. In May 2016 he received the BMJ Lifetime Achievement Award. His book ‘The Social Edge; the Power of Sympathy Groups for our Health, Wealth and Sustainable Future’ will be published in September 2018.
